Formula & how it works
Rectangle = length × width; square = side²; circle = π × radius²; triangle = base × perpendicular height/2. Sum each area × quantity. 1 square yard = 9 square feet.
Worked examples
Example 1
A 12 ft × 10 ft room has 120 sq ft = 13.3333 sq yd = 11.1484 m².
Example 2
Two 10 ft × 8 ft rooms total 160 sq ft. At $3 per sq ft the estimated cost is $480.
Assumptions & practical notes
Use decimal feet for feet-and-inches measurements: 10 ft 6 in = 10.5 ft. Alternatively choose inches and enter 126.
Split irregular floor plans into simple non-overlapping shapes. Subtract openings separately; the estimate does not automatically include waste.

Is square footage the same as floor material quantity?
It is the measured area. Buying material may require an additional waste allowance and package rounding.
