Formula & how it works
Order area = measured floor area × (1 + waste/100). Boxes = round up(order area ÷ box coverage). Purchased area = boxes × box coverage. Cost = boxes × box price.
Worked examples
Example 1
A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 ft². With 10% waste, allow 132 ft². At 20 ft² per box, 6.6 rounds up to 7 boxes, covering 140 ft². At $60 per box, material cost is $420.
Example 2
For a 5 × 4 m room and 5% allowance, plan for 21 m². Boxes covering 2 m² require 11 boxes, which supply 22 m².
Assumptions & practical notes
10% is a starting example, not a product or layout requirement. Ask your installer about diagonal layouts, herringbone, matching patterns and board defects.
Whole-box rounding is applied after waste. Leftover includes both the chosen allowance and the additional package rounding.
This is a material quantity estimate. It excludes labor, adhesive, underlayment, trim, delivery and tax. It does not optimize plank cuts.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from Square Footage Calculator?
Square Footage measures and combines room shapes. Flooring takes that net area and estimates purchasable boxes with waste and price.
Can I estimate several rooms?
Sum their net areas with Square Footage Calculator, then use known-area mode here. Do not add waste in both tools.
Should I round each room separately?
If every room uses the same flooring, a combined area usually avoids unnecessary per-room box rounding. Different products must be calculated separately.
Why is purchased area larger than area with waste?
Flooring is commonly sold by whole boxes. The last partial box is rounded up.
