CalcCommons

Calculation Methodology

CalcCommons uses standard arithmetic, geometry, and defined unit conversions. Formulas appear on the individual tool pages so you can follow the calculation with your own values.

Unit definitions

We use 1 inch = 0.0254 meters, 1 foot = 0.3048 meters, 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, and 1 US liquid gallon = 3.785411784 liters. Area and volume conversions square or cube the length factor. See the NIST Guide to the SI (SP 811) for unit guidance.

Accuracy and testing

Calculation functions are separate from the interface and covered by automated tests for typical results, invalid inputs, edge cases, and unit conversions. Display rounding is normally limited to four decimal places. Most tools use floating-point arithmetic; Fraction Calculator uses exact integer arithmetic and a denominator limit.

Material estimates

Gravel density, concrete bag yield, and waste allowances are editable planning assumptions. They are not certified specifications. Confirm bulk density and mixed bag yield with your supplier. Bag quantities are rounded up to whole bags.

Corrections

Use the Report an error link on any tool. Include the inputs, mode, units, expected answer, and the result you received. Update dates change only when meaningful content or calculation behavior changes.
