Formula & how it works Rectangular volume = length × width × depth. Circular volume = π × (diameter/2)² × depth. Known-area volume = area × depth. Cubic yards = cubic feet/27.

Assumptions & practical notes The depth unit is independent of the length unit. In known-area mode, feet means square feet and meters means square meters.

Frequently asked questions How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard? 27, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.
Can I convert square yards directly to cubic yards? Only when you also know the depth in compatible units.
