Cubic Yard Calculator

Convert a rectangular bed, round bed, or known area and depth into cubic yards.

Your inputs

Choose a quick value or enter your own. Example inputs are filled in to get you started.

EXAMPLE RESULT

Enter your measurements and calculate.

Calculated in your browser. Shared links include your entered values; only share information you intend to make public.

How to use

Choose rectangle, circle, or known area. Rectangle uses length and width; circle uses diameter; known area uses square units of your chosen length unit. Enter depth with its separate unit selector and calculate the volume.

Formula & how it works

Rectangular volume = length × width × depth. Circular volume = π × (diameter/2)² × depth. Known-area volume = area × depth. Cubic yards = cubic feet/27.

Worked example

Example 1

A 200 sq ft area covered 3 inches deep has 200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³, or 50/27 = 1.8519 yd³.

Assumptions & practical notes

The depth unit is independent of the length unit. In known-area mode, feet means square feet and meters means square meters.

This is geometric volume with no waste. Use Gravel, Mulch, or Concrete for material-specific allowances.

See our calculation methodology for unit definitions and testing practices.

Results are estimates for planning purposes. Verify measurements, product specifications, and applicable building codes before purchasing materials or starting work.

Frequently asked questions

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

27, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.

Can I convert square yards directly to cubic yards?

Only when you also know the depth in compatible units.
