How to use

Measure the paving footprint or enter the total area. Enter the compacted thickness and your mix density, choose an allowance and weight unit, then optionally add the supplier’s material price.

Formula & how it works

Compacted volume = area × thickness. Weight = volume × compacted mix density. Order weight = weight × (1 + allowance/100).

Worked example

Example 1

A 30 ft × 12 ft area at 3 in compacted thickness has volume 90 ft³. At the example density 145 lb/ft³, net weight is 13,050 lb = 6.525 US short tons. A 10% allowance gives 7.1775 US short tons.

Assumptions & practical notes

Use compacted thickness and compacted density together; do not add a second compaction multiplier.

This estimates asphalt mixture, not the binder component alone. Pavement thickness must be selected for the project separately.

See our calculation methodology for unit definitions and testing practices.

Results are estimates for planning purposes. Verify measurements, product specifications, and applicable building codes before purchasing materials or starting work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

A US short ton is 2,000 lb. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Select the matching result unit before entering the price.

Is the default density correct for every mix?

No. It is an editable illustration. Ask the producer for the density of the mix you will purchase.

Does the estimate include the base?

No. Subbase, base aggregate, excavation, haulage, equipment, labor and tax are separate.
