Worked example
Example 1
A 20 ft wide wall, 10 ft rectangular height and 4 ft gable rise has 240 ft² gross area. Subtract 20 ft² openings and add 10% waste: 242 ft². At 20 ft² per package, buy 13 packages.
Assumptions & practical notes
A gable uses the same base width as the rectangle below it. For irregular elevations, enter the measured combined area instead.
Package coverage must account for the manufacturer’s overlap. Accessory lengths and installation design are not inferred from area.
Results are estimates for planning purposes. Verify measurements, product specifications, and applicable building codes before purchasing materials or starting work.

Frequently asked questions
What is a siding square?
One square means 100 square feet of coverage. It is an area unit, not a specific number of packages.
Does this include trim and corners?
No. Starter strips, corners, trim, soffit, fasteners and weather barriers need separate takeoffs.
Can I use this for different siding materials?
Use it for products sold with a stated effective area coverage. Select the correct coverage and allowance for the specific product.
