How to use

Choose dimensions or enter the area receiving one layer of insulation. Deduct excluded areas, copy the package coverage for your selected product, and choose a reasonable allowance.

Formula & how it works

Packages = ceil((gross area − exclusions) × (1+waste/100) ÷ labeled package coverage).

Worked example

Example 1

A 20 × 10 ft surface minus 20 ft² excluded area leaves 180 ft². With a 10% allowance, plan for 198 ft². At 40 ft² per package, buy 5 packages.

Assumptions & practical notes

Use package coverage for the chosen thickness and product. This calculator does not select R-value or prove energy-code compliance.

For cavity insulation, enter combined clear cavity area if known. Loose-fill and spray foam need product-specific depth/density methods and are outside this calculator’s scope.

See our calculation methodology for unit definitions and testing practices.

Results are estimates for planning purposes. Verify measurements, product specifications, and applicable building codes before purchasing materials or starting work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate attic insulation?

Yes, for batts, rolls or boards sold with labeled area coverage. Enter the measured surface area and account for openings or excluded areas.

Does more material always mean a higher R-value?

No. R-value depends on the product, thickness and installation. Compression or gaps can affect performance.

Should I use wall area or cavity area?

Use the area that actually receives insulation. A gross wall area is a rough estimate; measured clear cavities provide a more specific takeoff.
