How to use

Enter a straight-wall run and overall height. Choose spacing and plate layers, check actual plate thickness, and add any separately specified extra studs. Use the itemized result for planning and confirm the framing details before purchase.

Formula & how it works

Base studs = ceil(run ÷ maximum spacing) + 1. Cut length = overall height − plate layers × actual plate thickness. Plate pieces = ceil(run ÷ stock length) × layers.

Worked example

Example 1

A 12 ft straight run at 16 in spacing uses 10 base studs. With no extra studs and 10% spares, buy 11. An 8 ft overall wall with three 1.5 in plate layers has a 7.625 ft stud cut length. Each 12 ft plate layer needs two 8 ft pieces: six pieces over three layers.

Assumptions & practical notes

This is a simplified no-opening straight-wall layout, not a structural design. Verify actual layout positions and framing details before cutting.

Spare-stud allowance does not apply to plate stock. Plate pieces are rounded per layer without pooling offcuts; joints and lap requirements need separate planning.

See our calculation methodology for unit definitions and testing practices.

Results are estimates for planning purposes. Verify measurements, product specifications, and applicable building codes before purchasing materials or starting work.

Frequently asked questions

Does it design door or window openings?

No. Headers, king studs, jack studs and cripples depend on an opening plan. Enter extra studs only after separately working out those details.

Is overall wall height the same as stud length?

No. This calculator subtracts the actual thickness of all selected plate layers.

Does the price include all lumber?

No. The optional price is per stud and the cost shown is stud-only. Plate stock, headers, fasteners and labor are separate.
