Formula & how it works
Scientific notation writes a nonzero number as a × 10ⁿ, with 1 ≤ |a| < 10. Multiply coefficients and add exponents for multiplication; divide coefficients and subtract exponents for division.
Worked examples
Example 1
123,000,000 = 1.23 × 10⁸. Enter 123000000 without grouping commas.
Example 2
0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴. (2 × 10³) × (3 × 10⁻²) = 6 × 10¹ = 60.
Assumptions & practical notes
Inputs support 1.23e8 or 1.23 × 10^8. Zero is represented as 0 × 10^0.
Uses approximately 15–16 significant digits. Values outside finite JavaScript limits are rejected; very large or small standard forms remain in scientific notation.

Are big integers exact?
Not necessarily. This is a floating-point tool, not an arbitrary-precision integer calculator.
Can I use a negative exponent?
Yes. For example, 3e-5 means 0.00003.
