Formula & how it works

For each digit: bring it down, divide by the divisor, multiply the quotient digit by the divisor, and subtract. Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder.

Worked example

Example 1

125 ÷ 4 = 31 remainder 1. Continue decimals: bring down 0 to make 10; 10 ÷ 4 gives 2 remainder 2; 20 ÷ 4 gives 5. Result: 31.25.
