How to use

Choose percentage or letter-grade inputs. Enter your current course grade before the final, the final exam weight, and your desired course grade. The result shows the required exam percentage and, when feasible, an example letter grade. Letter inputs use representative values; enter exact percentages for precision.

Formula & how it works

Required final = (target − current × (1 − weight/100)) ÷ (weight/100).

Worked examples

Example 1

Current 85%, target 90%, final weight 30%: (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.6667%.

Example 2

Current 90%, target 85%, final weight 20%: (85 − 90 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 65%.

Assumptions & practical notes

Current grade must exclude the final. Enter percentages from 0 to 100. Final weight must be above zero.

A required score over 100% is mathematically valid but unattainable without extra credit. A negative result means a zero already meets the target under these assumptions.

Letter inputs use representative US percentages (A+ 98, A 95, A- 91, B+ 88, B 85, B- 81, C+ 78, C 75, C- 71, D+ 68, D 65, D- 61, F 0). The letter result uses an example +/- scale; your school may differ.

What if the final is worth zero?

It cannot change your course grade, so a required final score is undefined.

Does this include rounding policies?

No. Schools differ; check whether the instructor rounds final course grades.

Can I use letter grades for my current and desired grades?

Yes. Choose Letter grades. The calculator converts them to representative US percentages before solving. These are examples rather than your school’s official scale; use actual percentages when you have them.
