How to use
Choose a block, brick or custom unit. Measure wall length and height, then subtract combined openings. Confirm actual unit faces and mortar joint thickness, set the number of wythes, and add an allowance for cutting and breakage.

Formula & how it works
Net wall area = length × height − openings. Module face area = (actual face length + joint) × (actual face height + joint). Units to buy = ceil(net area / module area × wythes × (1 + waste / 100)).
Worked examples
Example 1
A 20 × 8 ft wall with 16 sq ft of openings has 144 sq ft of net area. A 15⅝ × 7⅝ in block with ⅜ in joints forms a 16 × 8 in module. One wythe requires 162 equivalent blocks before waste, or 179 blocks with 10% waste.
Example 2
A 10 × 8 ft wall without openings, using 7⅝ × 2¼ in modular bricks and ⅜ in joints, needs about 548.57 equivalent bricks per wythe. With 10% waste, round up to 604 bricks.
Assumptions & practical notes
Preset dimensions describe common US unit faces, not every product. Select custom dimensions when the manufacturer specifies a different actual face.
Use actual unit dimensions when adding a mortar joint. Entering nominal dimensions and then adding a joint counts the joint twice.
The repeating-module method approximates edge joints and cut units. Bond pattern, corners, pilasters, lintels and decorative details can change quantities. Mortar, grout and reinforcement are not estimated.
See our calculation methodology for unit definitions and testing practices.
Results are estimates for planning purposes. Verify measurements, product specifications, and applicable building codes before purchasing materials or starting work.

Frequently asked questions
What is a wythe?
A wythe is one layer of masonry through the wall thickness. Enter the number of layers made from the selected unit; a brick veneer is commonly estimated as one layer.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
Yes. Enter their combined area in square feet or square meters to match your wall unit. Openings must total less than gross wall area.
Does this calculate mortar bags?
No. Mortar yield varies by joint profile, unit and application. Use product-specific yield guidance after determining your layout.
Why is the quantity rounded up?
Bricks and blocks are purchased as whole units. The equivalent count is shown separately, then waste is added before rounding the order quantity up.
